Championship Sunday brought us several good matches with some decided in third set tiebreaks while others weren’t as close as we thought they’d be. The two matches pitting the highest ranked teams took place in Cary (NC) as No. 4 Wake Forest met No. 5 Virginia while No. 2 Texas and No. 8 Baylor rumbled in Lawrence (KS). Wake and Virginia split regular season meetings with each winning at home so Sunday’s rubber match was expected to be close. New Mexico State Director of Athletics Mario Moccia named Emily Wang as the Aggies new women’s head coach. Wang, who graduated from Illinois in 2007, had been the head coach at Eastern Illinois for the last two seasons posting a 28-17 (.622) record. Wang replaces Ivan Fernandez who left after seven seasons to take the women’s head coaching job at UTEP. A year ago Texas Tech won 28 matches and hosted a NCAA Regional but going into tonight’s match against No. 4 Baylor the Red Raiders were winless in the Big 12 while having an overall record of just 10-14. Baylor was down a man with Jimmy Bendeck (#4 singles/#2 doubles) a late scratch so BU had to make adjustments to both its doubles and singles lineup. Texas Tech took advantage of the shift and picked up wins at No. 2 and No. 3 to take the early 1-0 lead. George Washington Director of Athletics Patrick Nero announced the hiring of David Macpherson as the Colonials new men’s tennis coach. Macpherson had been the Bryan Brothers coach since 2005 after having a successful pro career that lasted almost 20 years. Macpherson replaces Greg Munoz who resigned in the middle of his 10th season to become the Tennis Director at the Jakarta Tennis Academy in Indonesia. Usually we have to wait until the weekend to see top-25 matchups but we got a mid-week treat on Wednesday with three top-25 teams playing each other along with two other top-75 matchups.The day started off in Lexington with No. 20 Kentucky and No. 5 Ohio State playing indoors due to high winds and the chance of rain.Ohio State was able to claim the doubles point for 19th time in 23 tries after picking up wins at No. 1 and No. 3.
